After its confluence with River Arkavathi at Sangam, Kaveri flows through a deep gorge at Mekedatu. The gorge is deep and a maximum 30ft wide at places. Some other sections, the rock almost bridges the river so that a goat can leap across. Hence the name, Meke(Goat)Datu(Leap). A lot of strange looking rock formations and deep holes can be found here. To go to Mekedatu, one has to come to Sangam, cross the river and travel another 4 kms through a jeep track through the Cauvery Wild Life Sanctuary or along the Kaveri (Cauvery) river. The area is covered by hills on all sides and its very unlikely that you can spot wild life here.

Chunchi Falls :This is a small water falls on the way to Sangam. Take the Sangam Road after Kanakapura and after 23kms you can spot a road on the left side going to Chunchi falls. 5kms more from here for the falls. Thanks to the Prime Minister's Gram Sadak Yojana roads are good to this place. This water falls is nothing particular, but worth seeing if you are going to Sangam/Mekedatu.

Kabini Elephant camp, Balle - 16 KMS from Bamboo Folliage
Huge cauldrons sit on a three-pointed stone platform fuelled by fire from large logs of wood. Inside the cavernous vessel thick gravy of millet is boiling. Soon the millet will be spread out on a large slab of stone to cool off. And then expert tribal hands turn the entire concoction into ball-shaped mounds, almost the size of a football. It’s snack time for the working elephants at the camp. As the mahouts bring in their wards everyday at 9 am and 4 pm, the sight of the huge creatures being fed their snack is amusing. The elephants stand in a row, resting their trunks on wooden poles patiently waiting for their turn. No sooner than the mahouts begin to walk in their direction with the millet balls in their hands that the trunk shoots up skywards and the mouths grow wide open. Pop go the balls one after the other, disappearing at once into the large cave that is their tummy. Why this diet? Just to drive away the boredom of having to eat leaves and grass and bark for 18 hrs a day!

The star attraction at Balle Elephant Camp used to be Drona, the world-famous elephant who carried the golden howdah during the Dasara procession in Mysore consecutively for 18 years. A handsome creature, he would be the cynosure of a million eyes every time he walked imperiously at the end of the 2-km-long procession.

Now the Golden Howdah during the Dasara Procession is carried by Arjuna.
Entry: Free
Timings: Open from 7 AM to 6 PM. Best time to visit is between 9 AM – 11AM and 3 PM – 6 PM which is the snack time for the elephants at the camp.
